Gordon University: Hope or Wish?

Eduardo Velasco

Every educational institution is truly longing for a higher level when it comes to giving quality education. They seek to improve what they have and try to dig up what they don’t possess. They dream of becoming a center for excellence and be renowned among all the institutions around the globe.

Gordon College is one of these institutions which dreams of becoming a so- called university. The City, along with the officers of the government kept mentioning the transformation of Gordon College to Gordon University in every assembly or city events which I believe a very wrong thing to brag about. In the first place, does it reach the average requirement of being a university?

Few of the faculty in GC finished their master’s degree which is a major requirement to be an instructor. You could really count in your fingers who among them have finished their doctorate degree in education. When it comes to the competence of the faculty I believe we are not qualified. The facilities are not conducive to the students. The rooms are not good enough, the library, although transferred to a bigger place is not comfortable to be into, the college lacks essential facilities such as speech laboratory, bio laboratory, clinic – inactive, etc., the very long lines of students when paying their tuition fees because of the college has only ONE cahier, the “open gate 2” with non-GC students going inside and out, the group of goats crying MEeeehhh… Meeehhhh.. Do we call it a university or even a college?

Being a university is a very long and complicated process. As a matter of fact, if I’m not mistaken, Columban College which is 50 years now finds it hard to attain there aged dream. Compare to GC, they are far better when it comes to faculty, facilities and all. Although Gordon College produces competitive students and having a high rank in passing percentage, we shouldn’t take this as a way to be confident with regards on pushing thoroughly about GC being a university. Yes. The passing rate would indicate a good college but this alone cannot indicate a huge and complicated point of transformation. GC needs to grow more and improve all aspects gradually. It is in actual fact, novice since it began. 11 years would age many long years before they get hold of what they dream. But for now, it has to continue providing good quality education and produce excellent and competent students that would help the city and as well as the country in attaining success.
